Inform and Partner With National Organizations
Many national offices of organizations interested in the improvement of MSTE are located in Washington, DC. Members of the NASSMC staff and Board of Directors allocate time to working with leaders of those organizations. NASSMC seeks not only to better understand (and report to its members) the MSTE-related goals and activities of these national groups but also to inform the groups' leaders regarding the systemic MSTE improvement efforts of the state coalitions. Also, by performing selected services for these groups, NASSMC creates opportunities to influence groups' work in ways that will benefit the coalitions.
- Assist in preparing testimony and placing coalition leaders as presenters at Congressional and state legislature briefings arranged by national organizations (e.g., American Chemical Society; NASA).
- Review drafts of MSTE-related video and print publications (Achieve, Inc.; Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting Math and Science Project; National Alliance of Business; NASA).
- Construct education-reform segments of national meetings (e.g., American Mathematical Society; Department of Defense Education Outreach Coordinators; Education Commission of the States; Mathematics Association of America).
- Conduct workshops on system-focused improvement of MSTE for leadership groups from federal agencies (e.g., NASA Space Grant Directors; NASA Aerospace Education Specialists; National Security Agency Mathematics Education Partnership Program), business groups (e.g., National Alliance of Business, Aerospace States Association Delegates), national leadership groups in mathematics and science (e.g., Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics; Council of State Supervisors of Science; Board of Directors of the National Center for Atmospheric Research; National Security Agency Lead Teachers), and professional organizations of teachers of mathematics and science (e.g., National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; National Science Teachers Association).
- Serve on panels and committees charged with the preparation or review of programs and products focused on the systemic improvement of MSTE (e.g., Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences Task Force on Teacher Education; National Science Foundation Systemic Program Proposal Review Panels; National Science Foundation Systemic Program Site Visit Teams; U.S. Department of Education Expert Panel on Mathematics and Science).
