Promote Public Understanding and Involvement

Since their inception, the coalitions have reported a concern that the public better understand the need to change expectations for the mathematics, science, and technology education (MSTE) performance of all students. Specifically, the nature of proposed changes needs to be explained clearly and often. Also, they must be seen as being valued by employers and college faculty. The ultimate goal of improved communication with the public is to engage its support in promoting the new expectations.

In December 1997, NASSMC convened leaders from twenty-one national organizations whose members are affected by state and national efforts to improve MSTE. The groups represented included associations of parents, school administrators, teachers, corporate leaders, mathematicians, minorities, and teacher educators.

A series of meetings held over a period of eight months confirmed and clarified the groups' shared interest in the public's understanding of and involvement MSTE reform. Today, NASSMC collaborates with several of the groups on public-information activities.
