| ACTIVITIES |
2005-2006 Accomplishments
- Recruited, involved and sustained an enthusiastic coalition of educators, civic, business and parent leaders in the development of WDC STEM Partnership
- Received formal recognition of the WDC STEM Partnership by the Mayor, City Council, Superintendent and Board of Education
- Planned and conducted a successful 1st STEM Summit, attracting 320 participants from 65 schools in the city; raised over $18,000 in cash and in-kind support of the Summit
- Obtained a commitment of ongoing technical support of Anne Beers NES from NASA beyond the 3 years of funding
- Embraced the International Baccalaureate Program model as our primary implementation strategy to enhance STEM education in 3-4 schools in east Washington over the next 3-5 years.
Objectives for 2007
- Advocate for and participate in implementation of the International Baccalaureate Program at Anne Beers, Burrville Elementary Schools, Kelly Miller Middle and Woodson Senior High Schools
- Mobilize and encourage more east river applicants for the NASA Explorer School program
- Seek state recognition and financial support for WDC STEM Partnership from the DCPS State Education Agency and the Mayor’s State Education Office/Department of Education
- Embrace and raise money for a Teaming Initiative as a favored teaching and learning strategy for advancing STEM at Anne Beers NES and Washington East schools in 2006/2007 and then citywide schools at an October 2007 STEM Summit
- Renew, expand and deepen participation in WDC STEM Partnership by parents, educators, public policy officials, business and civic leaders including our new principals, new NASA Liaison person, and engage a new Project Director
NES Partnerships for Sustainability: The NES Partnerships for Sustainability Program was launched in 2003 as a pilot to gauge the effectiveness of state-based coalitions working in active collaboration with the NASA Explorer Schools. As part of this pilot funding was awarded to Washington DC, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Coalition, in partnership with Anne Beers Elementary School, to extend the impact of NES programming across Anacostia. |
