ACTIVITIES
GCSTME is a statewide organization of leaders from the corporate, education, government and community sectors which plans, encourages, coordinates and advocates policies, strategies, and programs supportive of excellence in science, technology and mathematics teaching and learning.

GCSTME efforts to improve the quality of education for all Georgia students are focused on student achievement in mathematics. In cooperation with Georgia's Department of Education, Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and various school districts, the Coalition has developed a major statewide mathematics education initiative, Math Matters, that supports: a rigorous, coherent curriculum; high, measurable student expectations; and effective teaching strategies. Math Matters will serve as a model for improving student achievement in other disciplines.

NES Partnerships for Sustainability: The NES Partnerships for Sustainability Program was launched in 2003 as a pilot to gauge the effectiveness of state-based coalitions working in active collaboration with the NASA Explorer Schools. As part of this pilot funding was awarded to Georgia Coalition for Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education (GCSTME) in partnership with Ralph J. Bunche Middle School, to enrich and expand current activities at the school.

The Georgia Coalition for Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education is working with the Georgia Partnership For Excellence in Education to encourage Georgia's Governor, Board of Education, and Department of Education to support state enrollment in the next International Mathematics and Science Study. GCSTME's session at the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders Conference urged adopting rigorous state mathematics education standards. GCSTME is working with Georgia Public Policy Foundation to raise public awareness of the importance of state adoption of national/international mathematics education standards in order to develop a world class workforce and technology-based economy. GCSTME's leadership proposed that the Board of Education adopt its Math Matters initiative for application in all of Georgia's schools and received strong feedback and support for the initiative from the Board's key policy analyst.
