| HAMS is the only state-level coalition of business, education, community, and policy leaders committed to the long-term, continuous improvement of the state's system of mathematics, science, and technology education from pre-kindergarten through college.
HAMS hosts meetings of professional organizations in Hawaii and the Pacific area countries to work on joint projects, participates in discussions regarding mathematics and science educational needs, and plans strategies for meeting those needs. It helped organize mathematical competitions to increase public awareness of the importance of mathematics. These competitions include State Mathematics Bowl for students at public and private high schools, the American Mathematics Competitions 8, 10, and 12 (AMC 8, AMC 10, and AMC 12), the State Science and Engineering Fairs, and various regional and state mathematics conferences. HAMS has worked with the State Department of Education in analyzing educational needs and changes. Because HAMS has members from the State’s Department of Education on the steering committee and because all public schools are under one Department of Education in the State, the goals and activities of HAMS complement, and are well articulated with, those of the State.
The Hawaii Association of Mathematics and Science has sparked policy and the interest of government private industry and commerce leaders’ in mathematics and science education as evidenced by their participation in mathematics and science education related activities. HAMS has developed a list of persons qualified persons to provide expert testimony to the state legislature and Board of Education concerning mathematics and science education and to address groups such as Parent-Teacher-Student organizations. |
