It is the mission of LaSIP/Delta RSI to increase Pre-K through Graduate student learning and achievement by providing professional development and leadership training, leading to implementation of high quality curriculum, instruction, assessment, and accountability practices relevant to societal and economic needs in the 21st century.
LaSIP/Delta RSI Professional Development Projects and District Enhancement Grants provide administrator and teacher professional development and resources to universities, schools, and districts to build capacity and sustain educational reform. The projects broaden the base of support for educational reform, facilitate convergence of resources, and expand communication with local leaders, civic groups, parents, and the public. The premier program, LINCS (Learning Intensive, Networking Communities for Success), developed by LaSIP/Delta RSI, in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education, assists districts in meeting state accountability goals by providing professional development through teams of leaders from each participating school. Universities, under the direction of LaSIP/Delta RSI, provide the professional development using the highly successful LaSIP/Delta RSI professional development model. Under the direction of the LaSIP/Delta RSI Project Director, Dr. Kerry Davidson, Louisiana was recently awarded (October 2002) a state-wide, $12 million GEAR UP grant. These monies will provide additional services to low achieving schools throughout the state.
LaSIP/Delta RSI have led the development of state mathematics and science curriculum frameworks; assessment frameworks; standards-based assessments; a state plan for educational technology; more focused textbooks and materials purchases; and classroom-based technology. It has funded over 400 local mathematics and science professional development projects. NRT and CRT data indicate that students of LaSIP/Delta RSI teachers consistently outperform students of teachers who have not participated in LaSIP/Delta RSI professional development projects. LaSIP/Delta RSI introduced "Big Picture" and "Administrator Leadership" workshops designed to stimulate reflective teaching, promote connected learning, and advance communication concerning the development of important ideas in K-12 mathematics and science. The Developing Educational Excellence and Proficiency in Mathematics and Science programs and LINCS programs have significantly improved student performance as measured on the state NRT/CRT. Mr. Cecil Picard, State Superintendent of Education, credited LaSIP/Delta RSI leadership role in saying "Our recent reform efforts have their strategic foundation in the concepts of standards-based and systemic reform within a comprehensive school and accountability system. In part or whole, these concepts were originally conceived and advanced through the Louisiana Systemic Initiatives Program." The Web site includes additional evidence of impact on systems reform. |
