MMASS is the only coalition representing the interests of the entire science and mathematics community: the University System, the Montana Science Teachers Association (MSTA), the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM), Private Scientists and Mathematicians, and the State Government, Business and Educational leadership organizations.
This organization has been in existence as a coalition of MCTM and MSTA since 1995. This fall it was reorganized to serve a broader coalition of people interested in mathematics and science education from the schools, colleges, businesses, and communities across Montana. In light of this change, MMASS has determined to: seek membership in and assistance from the National Alliance of State Science & Mathematics Associations to develop a well-rounded coalition representing all facets of mathematics and science in the state of Montana; expand Board membership in the areas of business and community leadership; achieve nonprofit status; set annual goals for the improvement of science and mathematics through a scheduled set of activities for the coalition; use the Annual MMASS Conference for business leaders to share ideas with science and mathematics teachers, K-College; and use the annual higher education conference to engage members of private, public, and tribal colleges in planning state initiatives. The Montana Mathematics and Science Society organized, coordinated, and ran a conference of representatives from schools, colleges, the university system, tribal colleges, and the government agencies for Higher Education and K-12 Education to determine statewide directions and goals for professional development for all science and mathematics educators. It also hosted a statewide conference in conjunction with the Annual Fall Educators Conference; MMASS presentations concentrated illustrating the integration of mathematics and science through real life applications and explorations. |
