| Mission: Bring business and education leaders together to help secure the future of Texas by improving the performance of the State’s publicly funded education systems.
Goals
- Academic achievement standards that will prepare Texas students for success in further education, equip them to compete in the global economy, help them become responsible citizens, and enable them to live fulfilling and satisfying lives.
- Functional literacy in English and another language for all students, and a substantial increase in the number of students completing advanced courses and programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with an emphasis on practical application to real world and workplace situations.
- Pre-kindergarten and other early childhood education programs that demonstrate effectiveness in meeting the developmental needs of all young children.
- Career and technology education programs that are based on a solid academic foundation, designed to meet established industry standards and future employer needs, use emerging technologies, and are articulated between high schools and higher education institutions.
- Actions that help close the gaps in higher education participation, success, excellence and research.
- Assessment and accountability systems that improve the performance of publicly funded education systems as indicated by student achievement.
- Policies, programs and actions that attract, develop, evaluate, reward and retain educators needed for high-performing schools, colleges and universities.

- Funding systems that provide resources appropriate to the defined missions and performance expectations of publicly funded education systems.
- Optimal use of resources and maximum return on taxpayer investment through shared services, fiscal accountability mechanisms and other actions.
- Policy that maintains a reasonable balance between state and local responsibility for public schools.

NASSMC State Summits Implementation Program (NSSIP): The NASSMC State Summits Implementation Program (NSSIP) provides assistance to state based organizations with planning, developing, administering, implementing, following-up and sustaining state mathematics and science education summits. NSSIP grants have been awarded to seven states in April 2005 through funding provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Additional support is provided through a separate grant from the U.S. Department of Education. TBEC convened business, education, civic, and political leaders at its Annual VIP Briefing January 18-19. The purpose is to help sustain a constructive and unified effort to improve public education in Texas. The theme of the 2006 Briefing was “A Commitment to Texas’ Future: Responding to the crisis in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).” Presenters included Dr. Geoffrey Orsak, Dean and Professor of the Southern Methodist University School of Engineering, and Dr.Willard Daggett, President of the International Center for Leadership in Education, among others.
