ACTIVITIES

VSMC hosts a week-long residential Summer Mathematics, Science and Technology Enrichment Institute at the University of Vermont for thirty top mathematics and science high school/middle school students. It also conducts a statewide High School Mathematics Talent Search that provides interested students an opportunity to demonstrate mathematical talent; prizes are awarded at a Spring banquet. VSMC's speaker's bureau, Expanding Horizons, takes college mathematicians into K-12 classrooms. A School/business Tutoring Project provides business people to work with both gifted students and students who need help in mathematics. The Vermont Mathematics Initiative (VMI) provides professional development in mathematics to the state's elementary teachers.

During 1992-1996 the Vermont State Mathematics Coalition (VSMC) placed 51 teachers in summer internships in businesses, experiences for which they received college credit. In each summer since 1993, VSMC has provided 30 high school students the opportunity to study a wide range of applications of mathematics and computing to science and technology in a week-long institute. Over 30 IBM employees conduct on-campus tutoring for students at four schools. The VMI has enrolled 106 teachers from 77 elementary schools across the state.Products available on the VSMC website (www.vermontinstitutes.org/vsmc) include: a brochure on the VSMC Expanding Horizons speakers’ bureau; a copy of the latest Talent Search test; and a brochure describing the Vermont Employer/Teacher Internship Program. A video titled The Bottom Line: Everyone Profits describing the Teacher/Business Internship Program.

VSMC was a sub-contractor for Vermont’s Statewide Systemic Initiative, administering the Teacher/Business Internship Program; it then assisted the state School-to-Work Initiative in administering of the Vermont Employer/Teacher Internship Program. VSMC has partnered with the University of Vermont in establishing the Summer Enrichment Institute. VSMC’s Executive Director is a member of the Community Awareness Committee of the regional School-to-Work Collaborative, one of whose activities was to produce a 30-minute video about the Vermont Employer/Teacher Internship Program for the Regional Educational Television Network.
