The Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition (VMSC) is a unique alliance of state-wide education, corporate, and public policy leaders working together to strengthen and revitalize mathematics, science, and technology education in pre-kindergarten through graduate school.
VMSC assesses policies and practices affecting student performance (e.g., a 1999 study on the preparation and availability of middle school teachers. It hosted a 1999 public forum Preparing Virginia’s K-9 Teachers in Math and Science and hosted the forum Success of Women and Minorities in Mathematics, Science, and Technology in 2000. VMSC publishes the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations, for those engaged in the mathematical, scientific, and technological preparation of teachers, and sponsors Solve-It, a state-wide program of mathematics activities for elementary school students and parents. The Coalition also sponsors and coordinates a state-wide program of professional development courses for mathematics and science teachers.
Linking Leaders: The Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition (VMSC) participated in and strongly influenced the development and adoption of both Virginia's Mathematics, Science and Technology Standards of Learning and its requirements for teacher licensure. Since 1993, VMSC has received continuous state funding for professional development mathematics courses for teachers. VMSC entered the NASA Linking Leaders Program in 1999. VMSC led a statewide Lead Teacher initiative that became a component of the Virginia State Systemic Initiative, and continues to work for the adoption of lead teacher programs.
During 1994-99, the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition (VMSC) participated in and strongly influenced the development and adoption of both Virginia's Mathematics, Science and Technology Standards of Learning and its requirements for teacher licensure. Since 1993, VMSC has received continuous state funding for professional development mathematics courses for teachers. Since 1995, VMSC has raised funding for development and distribution of the Solve-It activities that are received by more than 500,000 children in grades K-5. VMSC led a statewide Lead Teacher initiative that became a component of the Virginia State Systemic Initiative, and continues to work for the adoption of lead teacher programs. |
